The Ultimate Steel Mace Workout

The Ultimate Steel Mace WorkoutThe problem with owning exercise equipment like a steel mace  or a steel club is that workouts are a little hard to come by. You can’t exactly stream this stuff over Netflix, so you’re left with ordering obscure DVDs over the internet that may or may not be what you’re looking for. Because these DVDs don’t sell high volumes, the cost of them is often higher than you’d pay for something like The Avengers on Blu-Ray. Of course there’s always home-made YouTube clips of guys swinging around steel clubs, but the production leaves a lot to be desired.

What Onnit has done is taken the next logical step in its fitness empire. The company is not only bringing steel maces and steel clubs to the masses, its now also providing the workout routines so you can make the most of this equipment. A smart move, I thought, but what I like even more is the delivery method. Gone are the days of physical media, either in the form of a video tape or disc. No longer will you have to wait days or weeks for your video to arrive in the mail. Onnit is now offering digital downloads, the first of which is The Ultimate Steel Mace Workout.

The advantages to a digital download are plentiful. Pay for it, download it, and begin your workout within a few minutes. No waiting by the mailbox for your video to be delivered. Going on the road? Copy the video file to your laptop, tablet, or even your smart phone to take it on the road with you. Back it up to a USB stick and ensure you never accidentally delete or lose it. The workout can be with you wherever you go–indoors or out–and you won’t have to be tied to your television.

But enough about the format, let’s talk about The Ultimate Steel Mace Workout itself, which is hosted by Mr. Onnit, Aubrey Marcus. Aubrey has designed a workout that’s suitable for any skill level. Obviously, newbies will want to start with the lowest weight possible, and savages can go for the heaviest if they can handle it. Aubrey then puts you through an intense full body workout that pushes your cardio and strength to its limits, and then brings you back down with a yoga cooldown.

The video also features “extras” or bonus features in the form of videos that outline the history of the mace and techniques you’ll use in the video to ensure proper form. Priced at only $5, it’s cheap enough to take a gamble on if you own and use steel clubs. Don’t have steel clubs? Onnit is selling them right now at a 10% discount.

I haven’t yet purchased The Ultimate Steel Mace workout, but I’m definitely intrigued, and with Onnit’s track record, I’m sure it’s a quality product.

A Powerful Joe Rogan T-Shirt!

A Powerful Joe Rogan T-ShirtI realize this isn’t specifically a Joe Rogan T-shirt, as it doesn’t have his face on it and it isn’t a part of his Higher Primate line. But let’s face it: Joe was the one who made the “POWERFUL!” phrase popular, at least to listeners of his The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

What I like about this powerful shirt is how clean and simple it is. It’s not like the garish Deathsquad T-shirts that Redban sells, and it doesn’t scream that you listen to TJRE podcast. It’s a subtle nod to let those who know know that you have good taste in podcasts and fitness gear and supplements. Yes guys, this is actually an Onnit T-shirt available on the Onnit website, but it’s clearly Rogan-inspired. Grab one if you like Joe, like his podcast, or want to support Onnit and the awesome things Aubrey and the guys over there are doing.

The shirt is heather gray with big black block letters across the front. The left sleeve has a tiny black patch with the double N Onnit logo, and the back has a small Onnit logo just below the neck hole. Clean, subtle, and comfortable. This shirt is a tri-blend crewneck T, made from a 50% polyester, 25% cotton, and 25% rayon blend. It weighs 4.26 oz. if you care about how much your shirts weigh. For detailed measurements, head over to the Onnit website and figure out which size you are. They come in all sizes from small up to XXL for you guys who are extra swole, and they’re less than $20. POWERFUL!

Think “Instead” of Rather Than “No” When it Comes to Food

Think "Instead" of Rather Than "No" When it Comes to FoodThe brain is quite powerful. The placebo effect can trick us into thinking something is having an effect when it’s not, and we can even use it to help us lose weight, too. One way to do this is by thinking of “instead” rather than “no” when it comes to food, specifically your snacking habits. This can be better than telling yourself that you can’t have something.

A blogger at Lifehacker wrote an interesting post about thinking of “instead” rather than “no” when dieting, which is based off something written in an office management book by author Heidi Grant Halvorson. Heidi said that the key to passing on snacks at the workplace–though this can work at home as well–is to think of what you will do when temptation strikes in advance. Her example is to tell yourself that you can have a cookie, but if you want a second, drink a glass of water instead. By using the water as a replacement instead of telling yourself no, you can more easily move past the urge to have that second cookie.

On a related note, researchers at Utrecht University found that the more you think about NOT doing something, the more likely you are to do it. Sitting around telling yourself that you won’t have that second cookie and that you’ll drink that glass of water instead might actually make you eat the cookie. Tell yourself ahead of time that you’ll have the water, but don’t sit around thinking about not eating the cookie. Focus your mind on other things instead of the delicious cookies.

I know, I know. You’re probably thinking that drinking a glass of water won’t take the place of eating a cookie (or pizza, or chips, or candy, or…) but I can guarantee that after you eat that second cookie, you’ll regret it and wish you had that glass of water instead. At the very least, this method is worth a try. Your brain might surprise you and this little mind hack could prove to be a useful tool when it comes to choosing the healthier option.

What is Defense Soap?

What is Defense Soap?Like a lot of things related to health and fitness, I first heard about Defense Soap while listening to The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. If I remember correctly, Eddie Bravo and Joe were talking about the soap and how essential it is to those who train wrestling and/or Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I remember wondering at the time “what is Defense Soap and can I use it if I don’t train?” but then my mind drifted to something else and I forgot about it completely. Fortunately my mind was refreshed recently when Onnit sent me an email to let me know it’s now stocking Defense Soap on its webstore.

To answer my first question, Defense Soap is a product that was designed specifically for those who participate in sports like jiu-jitsu and wrestling where sweaty participants roll around with one another. The reason this soap is so important to wrestlers and BJJ practitioners is that it can help fight off the microbial skin infections that commonly infect participants of these sports. I’m not talking about dry skin either, though Defense Soap can help with that. I’m talking about more serious skin infections and skin ailments like ringworm, impetigo, athlete’s foot, jock itch, lice, dandruff, and acne. Defense Soap can do all this in a way you probably wouldn’t think of.

We’ve all heard how the proliferance of anti-bacterial soaps has actually changed bacteria. They’re now resistant to our traditional antibiotics, and as a result, we’re now more prone to sickness. Furthermore, while anti-bacterial soaps kill 99.95% of all the bad germs and microbes we come in contact with each day, that number also includes all the good microbes that our bodies need. Yes, our bodies have their own natural “security systems” in the form of natural flora that can help fight off things like ringworm and athlete’s foot. Traditional soap kills this natural flora, but Defense Soap is powerful enough to control the bad microbes you come in contact with each day, while preserving this healthy flora.

If that wasn’t appealing enough, Defense Soap is also free of alcohol and chemicals like triclosan. It’s an organic product that’s made in the good ol’ U-S of A, crafted from natural tea tree and eucalyptus oils. You don’t need to be an athlete to use it, either. You just need to want a healthy, natural alternative to anti-bacterial soaps that are loaded with chemicals that ultimately do more harm than good. And that’s precisely what Defense Soap can deliver.

New Onnit Silkscreened Art Prints and Zombie T-Shirts!

Onnit Zombie Bell Kettlebell T-ShirtFirst off, let me start this post by apologizing for the lack of updates recently. As I mentioned earlier, I was on holidays last week so I took the week off. Then, I got busy getting back to work and couldn’t find the motivation to update the blog during my free time. But I’m back into the swing of things now and hope to update Tight Lightning at least three times per week: every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

For today’s blog post, I just want to point out a few new things that Onnit has on its webstore. I’ve been writing about Onnit a lot recently, mainly because the company decided to drop so many new products all at once. This isn’t a bad thing by any means, but I’ve been writing more about products and less about other things like exercise, food, and other healthy tips to help improve your life.

As you guys know, Onnit released its line of Zombie Bell kettlebells just before Halloween. Onnit also released DigesTech, its new digestive aid to help ease discomfort caused by eating and to help your body absorb vitamins and nutrients more efficiently. If that wasn’t enough, the Onnit 180 rejuvenating drink mix (with Alpha Brain!) that’s designed to help the body recover was also released within the past couple of weeks. But the company also dropped a few other new items that won’t help you improve the way your body looks or feels.

The first of these items is a line of Onnit silkscreened prints. I’ve always admired the artwork that Onnit uses on its shirts. It’s stylish, it’s unique, and it’s not plastered with logos and text. As you can see below, each print relates to an Onnit product without being too obvious. I’m seriously considering ordering the shark print to frame for my house, but the owl with its glow in the dark ink is badass too. They’re priced just under $15 each, so they’re a rather inexpensive way to add some unique artwork to your home. Also worth mentioning is that each print is printed on fine recycled Speckletone stock paper, they measure 18”x24”, and they’re shipped rolled up to ensure they arrive in mint condition.

Onnit Silkscreened Art Prints

Speaking of Onnit’s artwork and T-shirts, a brand new Onnit Zombie Bell T-shirt has also been added to the website. Just like the other shirts, the Zombie Bell shirt features the same style of minimal flowing artwork with a splash of color. This one is more like a rainbow really, but it fits with the almost cartoonish style of the artwork. You can check it out at the top of this post, and if you would like to order it, you can find it on Onnit’s website in men’s and women’s sizes.

Onnit 180 Drink Mix Now Available!

Onnit 180 Drink Mix Now Available!I’m on holidays this week so I’ve been away from the computer, but I thought I’d type up this quick blog post to let everyone know that Onnit 180 drink mix powder is now available! I first wrote about this months ago–late spring or early summer, if I remember correctly–so this is a long time coming. I’ve been really excited about this product!

So in a nutshell, Onnit 180 is a rejuvenating drink mix that’s filled with vitamins and nutrients. I first heard Aubrey talk about Onnit 180 on Joey Diaz’s podcast The Church of What’s Happening Now and he said that it is a great product for anyone who suffers from jet lag, or for when you’re hungover. It’s actually like a few Onnit supplements combined: you get the cognitive enhancing and neurotransmitter benefits of Alpha Brain, the adaptogens from Shroom Tech Sport, 5-HTP from New Mood, along with minerals to boost the immune system and some new ingredients as well. Basically Onnit 180 is great for any situation where the body feels stress, like jet lag and hangovers of course, but when you’re feeling down or when you need Alpha Brain’s effects to hit you faster than taking the supplement in capsule form.

Onnit 180 powder drink mix is now available on the Onnit website and it comes in boxes of 10. It’s priced at about $30 for a box of 10, which can seem expensive, but keep in mind this isn’t Kool-Aid. It’s also not medicine, but you should treat it that way: taking it only when you need, not when you’re thirsty. Having a box at the office, at home, and one for the suitcase will ensure that you’re always covered when stress from flying, drinking, or working becomes overwhelming.

Onnit DigesTech Released!

Onnit DigesTech ReleasedIt’s been a busy week for Onnit, with the release of its Zombie Bells kettle bells, new posters, a new shirt, and now its digestion aid. Like they say, when it rains, it pours. I’m excited about the Zombie Bells as much as the next guy, but don’t overlook Onnit’s newest supplement DigesTech.

From its name alone you can likely gather that DigesTech aids in digestion. Fortunately this is not a problem that I have to deal with, but I know that many of you do. That being said, DigesTech isn’t solely for the people who have trouble digesting things like dairy, fats, carbs, protein, and fiber.

Of course, those who do have digestion issues will feel positive effects from taking DigesTech. This product contains professional grade digestion enzymes that are formulated to help break down everything I mentioned above. This can ease discomfort that comes from digesting food, but Onnit’s DigesTech helps you absorb nutrients more efficiently as well.

Onnit DigesTech is crafted using a variety of ingredients designed to break down the five major food categories I mentioned above. These ingredients include protease to digest protein, amylase to digest carbs, lipase to digest fat, along with 14 other digestive aids. This is the time of year when people tend to overeat and eat especially large meals, so DigesTech is the perfect all-natural solution to help you feel a little bit better. You will absorb more nutrients and your body will break down the food faster, leading to a decrease in fatigue and bloating after big holiday meals.

Onnit Zombie Bells Now Available!

Onnit Zombie Bells Now Available!Oh shit! Everyone has been waiting weeks for these, and now the Onnit Zombie Bells are finally available. I say “they” because there is actually more than one Zombie Bell. In fact, there are four Zombie Bells in total, varying in size of course, and they’re all available right now. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, and now it’s that much cooler.

Let’s get right into it and take a look at each of these Zombie Bells working from smallest to largest, from the right side of the image below over to the left:

Onnit Zombie Bells Kettlebells

Brain Goblin Zombie Bell
This is the smallest of the Zombie Bells, weighing in at a half pood, which is 18 lbs. He has rotting flesh, exposed teeth, and angry lifeless eyes that stare back at you as you swing him around.

Staple Head Zombie Bell
The Staple Head Zombie Bell weighs a full pood or 36 lbs. He’s missing his nose and his lips and his scalp has been ripped off revealing his skull underneath, what’s remaining of his flesh is held to his head with staples.

Ghostface Thrilla Zombie Bell
The Ghostface Thrilla Zombie bell weighs 1.5 poods or 54 lbs. This guy has an angry sneer, he’s missing a nose and his lips, and like the others, his flesh is rotting off his face.

The Mega Death Zombie Bell
The most badass of all the Zombie Bells is the two pood 72 lb. Mega Death Zombie Bell. This guy too is a little angry that he’s a member of the living dead. Someone’s gotten to him and managed to clamp his mouth shut. While you won’t have to worry about him biting a chunk out of your body, he’s definitely the most intimidating of the Zombie Bells to workout with.

All four of these Onnit Zombie Bell kettlebells are crafted with chip-resistant iron, so if you want to workout with them, they’ll stand the test of time. If you want to display them as works of art, they’re perfect for that too. They’ll also make incredible weapons should a zombie apocalypse take over the world at any time.

As I said, these Zombie Bells can be displayed as works of art, and that’s not hyperbole. They are beautifully crafted with incredible attention to detail. Each Zombie Bell is made to human skull proportions. They’re balanced perfectly as well, so if you do want to work out with them, you can, and they’re feel just like a traditional kettlebell will. But these are infinitely more badass.

Like the Primal Bells, the Zombie Bells are available for a limited time only. If you want to buy one, don’t wait. If you think you might want the whole collection, scoop them all up. If you choose either of the two biggest Zombie Bells in your order, you’ll also get a pair of Onnit Zombie Bell wrist guards to sweeten the deal.

Happy Halloween!

Lose Weight Eating Only Beer and Sausages

Lose Weight Eating Only Beer and SausagesFor some guys out there, I’m sure this seems like the ultimate diet. Eat only sausages and drink only beer and still lose weight. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it’s not. It’s just a matter of numbers.

About three years ago, Arizona resident Evo Terra changed up his diet to include just beer and sausages, inspired by Octoberfest. Over time, Evo managed to shed 14 pounds. His health wasn’t impacted that negatively, either. According to his doctor, Evo’s cholesterol actually dropped by a third in addition to the weight loss.

So how is the possible? As I alluded to earlier, it’s a matter of numbers. Let’s say that Evo consumes 1,500 calories worth of beer and sausage on a particular day. If he burns anything over 1,500 calories on that day through work or exercise, he’ll be at a calorie deficit. Evo will be burning off more calories than he actually consumes.

This is the key to his diet, as wacky as it sounds: watch your calories, and burn off more than you eat. You could replace beer and sausages with anything that you want to eat on a daily basis, like Oreos and milk or pizza and Diet Coke. So long as the calories you take in are less than the calories you burn, the weight will fall off. Of course, most people like a bit of variety in their lives, so limiting themselves to a diet of sausages and beer, for instance, isn’t that appealing.

The Howler Primal Bell from Onnit Now Available!

The Howler Primal Bell from Onnit Now Available!I know everyone is all excited about the new Onnit Zombie Bells, and I am too. I say “bells” plural because there is more than one. Aubrey Marcus said on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast that there will actually be four Zombie Bells kettlebells in various sizes. So, it looks like this will be an ongoing thing for Onnit: kettlebells in four different varieties each with a different look. (Update 10/28/13: Zombie Bells now available!)

The first of these stylized kettlebells was of course the series of Primal Bells. Three were first released; the chimp, the ape, and then the orangutan, and yesterday the fourth in the series was released. This one is called The Howler!

The Howler is the smallest of the Primal Bells, weighing just a half pood, or 18 lbs. in terms we can all understand. This one looks like a screaming chimp with his fangs exposed. While it’s the smallest of the Primal Bells, it’s definitely the most menacing looking!

Like all the Primal Bells, The Howler is crafted from chip-resistant iron that will stand up to regular wear and tear and rusting as well. You can use this like a savage and keep it on display in the meantime. It’s a work of art that’s perfectly balanced, meaning you can use it like a traditional kettlebell and it won’t feel any different. It just looks infinitely more badass than a cannonball with a handle attached to it.

Check out the whole line of Primal Bells at Onnit, and if you haven’t bought any yet, you can buy all four in a bundle at a significant savings. You can save 15% total when you purchase all at once! But make sure you save up a bit of money for the Zombie Bells which are now available, just in time for Halloween!.

Check out this 360 degree view of the new Howler:
