Onnit Introduces EGN Powerfood

Aubrey Marcus was on Joey Diaz’s podcast talking about Onnit’s upcoming products and he mentioned something about a new product that would rival Green Vibrance. Seven months later, this product has finally come to fruition, and it’s called Onnit EGN Powerfood.

Back then I had no idea what Green Vibrance was, so I did a little research and found out that it’s a powder that you mix in water or juice. It’s a superdrink that provides you with a wide range of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that a lot of us don’t get through our daily eating habits. Having the ability to drink some Green Vibrance and get everything you need from one glass is appealing. The problem according to Aubrey is that Green Vibrance doesn’t taste good. At all. If you’re like me, drinking something that tastes disgusting doesn’t make me want to drink it, regardless of how good it is for me.

So what Aubrey set out to do was to create something in the same vein as Green Vibrance, but have it taste good. The result is EGN Powerfood, with the EGN standing for Earth Grown Nutrients, a favorite phrase of Mike Dolce. It works in much the same way as Green Vibrance: you scoop some of the powder into a glass of water or juice and chug it back.

So what’s in this EGN Powerfood? Literally too much stuff for me to type out here, but I’ll break it down into categories: there are an assortment of antioxidants, a variety of greens, a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, a blend of ingredients designed for detoxing, and a blend for digestion to cap it off. It’s honestly a little unbelievable when you look at the list of ingredients and think that somehow they condensed all of this stuff into the plastic jar of EGN Superfood, and that somehow you can obtain the benefits of these ingredients by drinking one glass of the stuff per day.

I’m the type of person who doesn’t like eating many vegetables. I’d rather blend and drink them in a smoothie than eat them with my meals, but I try as best as I can. Knowing that you can mix up a drink and obtain the same benefits is definitely appealing. Now some of that stuff I force myself to eat I can take off the menu and substitute it with EGN Powerfood instead.

For those who care about gluten and GMOs and all those other food-related buzzwords, EGN Powerfood is vegan-friendly, non GMO, and it doesn’t contain any dairy, gluten, or soy.

Is White Rice Bad for Me?I was never a big fan of rice. I ate it occasionally but it wasn’t something that I ever went out of my way to make. That is until I first had basmati rice. The taste and texture of it appeals to me in ways which I cannot describe. I’m now craving it so much I have to tell myself to relax and space out my meals that include rice. After all, foods that are white are bad for you, right?

Well, it all depends what we’re talking about. Whole grain bread, pasta, and rice will contain more fiber than their processed, white counterparts. Whole grain rice also has more calcium and vitamin E than white rice. But is all white rice bad?

Something that’s common to all rice–white or whole grain–is that it’s virtually fat-free, low in sodium, and it’s gluten-free, too. People who have legitimate conditions where they cannot consume gluten can eat all the rice they want. White and whole grain rice also contains eight essential amino acids, vitamins, iron, and potassium. So white rice isn’t something that should be written off completely the way some people say all white bread is bad.

I think the key to eating rice is to have it as part of a meal rather than your entire meal. Sure, I could sit down and eat an entire bowl full of basmati rice with nothing else, but I won’t. Instead, I’ll use a bit of basmati rice as the base and then add things into it to complement it. A little bit of chicken and a lot of vegetables combined with the rice is a healthy way to satisfy my craving for rice while enjoying a balanced meal that’s delicious and filling.

I try to eat healthy and drink at least two liters of water per day. This is a slippery slope for me, though, as I’m sure it is for many others. I can go a few weeks eating well and drinking my water each day and exercising, too. Then I have a bad day or two, and slide back into my old ways. I don’t exercise, eat bad, and don’t drink enough water.

So what does this have to do with the color of my urine? Well, I’ve been climbing back up that hill recently, and I’ve been drinking a lot more water. As I stare down at the bowl when going to the bathroom, I’ve been noticing the color of my urine. It’s been going from it’s typical dark yellow/amber-ish hue (TMI, I know) back to very light yellow or almost clear when I’m drinking water. This got me thinking, what does the color of my piss tell me?

The other day, as if they read my mind, Lifehacker posted an article along with a graphic–courtesy of The Cleveland Clinic–that helps you diagnose yourself. There’s a wide range of colors ranging from clear to green, purple, and even urine that fizzles like soda pop. Generally the lighter your urine, the better. The darker and more colorful it gets, the more you should worry. Of course, when you wake up in the morning it will almost always be darker, but as the day goes on and you drink more water, it should get almost clear.

As far as bodily waste goes, this is about as revealing as I will get on this blog. There will be no “what does the shape and texture of my feces mean?” in the upcoming weeks.

The Healthiest Alcoholic DrinksI’ll admit it, I like to drink. I go out occasionally, drink way too many pints, get bad food on the way home, and wake up the next day hungover. Of course that day becomes a write off as well, mainly because I’m too hungover to get out of bed and do anything, so I mainly lie around and eat even more bad food. As you can see, one night of drinking can lead to days of overindulging and thousands of extra calories consumed that you otherwise wouldn’t have ingested.

With this in mind, there are a few things you can do to bring down the total amount of calories you’ll take in during a night of drinking, or at the very least make some healthier choices. One of my favorite blogs, Gizmodo, put together a list of the nine “healthiest” alcoholic drinks that you can have when you’re going to tie one on. I put healthiest in quotes because there aren’t really (m)any alcoholic drinks that will have a positive effect on your health–especially when you’re drinking a lot of them at one time–but there are definitely ones that aren’t as bad as others.

The standard for anyone who’s watching their weight is the vodka soda. Vodka is a spirit with a low amount of calories (relatively speaking) and the soda has no calories. In my opinion, this is boring and only recommended if you are looking to get drunk quickly. You don’t really sit around sipping and enjoying a vodka soda.

As I said, Gizmodo has compiled a list of other drinks in addition to the vodka soda that will appeal to anyone who’s looking to take a healthier approach to drinking, opting for drinks made with fruits and vegetables–or just straight alcohol–rather than ones made with sugary fruit juice cocktails and soda. Trick Yourself Into Eating HealthierThe mind is a very cool thing. Sometimes it will make decisions without us even realizing it. These subconscious decisions affect us in many ways, including how we eat. This can be a good thing and it can be a bad thing. It all depends on what we see first before we eat.

Brian Wansink, the professor of consumer behavior at Cornell University, found that we make food choices based on trigger foods. If we see healthy foods first, we’re more likely to make healthy food choices. If we see junk food first, we’re more likely to make food choices that skew to the unhealthy side of things.

Brian suggests that people who want to eat healthier apply this within their homes. For example, if you want to make healthier food choices when you’re eating, serve vegetables first before eating a bowl of pasta rather than with the pasta, or not at all. You might be more likely to eat less pasta or pass on the second helping.

It’s also recommended that you stock your cupboards, fridge, and freezer in this way. Everyone needs junk food every now and then, so if you have some in your house, push it to the back and keep the healthier options at the front. You won’t necessarily forget that the junk food is there, but your mind might make the decision for you to reach for the bowl of fruit rather than the cookie jar that’s placed behind it.

Mike Dolce’s Breakfast Bowl Recipe

Mike Dolce's Breakfast Bowl RecipeMike Dolce has a great book called Living Lean that is packed with great recipes, but also a lot of information about eating healthy coupled with stories that will motivate you to lead a cleaner lifestyle. Lately I’ve been trying to eat as much Dolce-approved foods whenever possible, and using his recipes as well. One of my personal favorites is the breakfast bowl.

If you follow Mike Dolce on Twitter, you’ll see he retweets a lot of people who are “Dolce Disciples” (my term) who also love the breakfast bowl! It does take a bit of time to prepare, but the end result is definitely worth the prep time it takes. The breakfast bowl is filled with healthy ingredients that will satisfy your hunger until your next meal or snack, and it tastes really good too.

The ingredients you’ll need for the breakfast bowl are as follows: oat bran or buckwheat; blueberries; strawberries; raisins; banana; peanut or almond butter; flax seeds; cinnamon; water. I won’t get into toe specifics of making the breakfast bowl, but with that list of ingredients you can probably figure out what to do. I’d suggest picking up Living Lean or The Living Lean Cookbook if you want to learn exactly how to make the breakfast bowl along with many other healthy recipes.

The one part of the breakfast bowl that always trips me up is making the oats on the stove with a sauce pan. I’m so used to nuking a packet of oats in the microwave that standing over the stove each morning is definitely taking some getting used to. That being said, when the breakfast bowl is made and I sit down to eat it, the extra little bit of effort definitely feels and tastes like it paid off.
